Tow Bars/Rescue points

I have a 2010 GL-R Twin Cab Diesel Auto.

I have a rescue point at the front but nothing at the back. In fact all I have at the back is a step which is attached to flanges at the end of the chassis.

I am told that all I can do is to have a tow bar installed. 2 Quotes around $800.

Would appreciate any comments. I live in the Lowood Q area.

There are also tow hooks that they put on to the non towbar equipped tritons. They bolt onto the chassis rails.

You can pick them up on ebay occasionally as they're standard on one of the lower models - explained at that link above - and they get removed when people fit towbars to that model.

Also you should be able to pick up a towbar for more like $600 I would have thought - even the TJM rear protection bar which has a tow mount built in will set you back about that much.

Will be removing my genuine towbar soon but I see that you are miles away so that probably won't help.

Hey guys, really interested in one of these rear hooks - I was off to the 4x4 & camping show this weekend to purchase a rear bar solely for a rear recovery point for an upcoming trip. Are the hooks rated and/or would it be suitable for snatching?

I bought a rated hook for the front but had to return it because I couldn't find anywhere to mount it. ARB said they don't manufacture front recovery points - that I'd just 'have' to buy a bull-bar to get a front rated recovery point so currently i've got the standard front points and nothing on the rear

Can't say I know the answer there mate. They are pretty heavy duty and they do call them tow hooks but I suppose the dynamic loads in a snatch might exceed your typical towing forces. They're quite solidly mounted with 4 bolts and a plate to go inside the chassis rail. Query though whether it would be a good idea to be snatching off only one chassis rail. Doesn't sound like a great idea does it, although we do that on the front of our vehicles already I suppose??

g_mac, about the only problem I see is that with a GLX-R you already have the rear step which hangs pretty low and uses some of the mounting holes on the chassis that the hook would use. If you installed the hook the snatch strap might not have a clear run out from the hook (i.e. foul on the step). Looking at the hook I don't think it has a strength issue - just whether it will work with your step. It was no problem on mine but I have ML VR so no step and shorter tub.

ARB bars for the Triton dont have a recovery point.

nope aparently not. i asked OL to install one now i have the 12lb winch and they said there is nothing to bolt one two. you cannot get anything that is welded 'rated' as it has to be testable. nowhere to bolt one on the ARB bar.

if someone knows of a way to do it them please tell me.

at this point i obviously have a winch point and the large hook we have all been using. i guess the snatching will impose a bigger load and a double pull with synthetic rope and damper will have less spectacular impact if it does break.

If your really interested in rated recovery points, you just need something like this made up.




I actually know a place that can make something like these and then place a certification plate on them. Another step above anything out there ATM.

Mate of mine has a rope access bizo. They install rope access systems on buildings... high rise obviously and those mounts pictured above look mighty similar and are all engineer rated stuff by law... they dangle off buildings with heaps of gear on them so one hopes they won't snap

Even the bolts ate rated and single use the head cracks off at correct torque...

Not cheap stuff but for one recovery point should be cheap enough?
Worth asking him??

Good idea BG but there's a big difference between something that you'd trust your life to while hanging off a rope to something that will take a shock load of maybe 4 tonnes. Grade of steel, thickness, bends, reinforcing design, type and number of attachments etc. are all relevant to the strength and engineered rating.

Got a couple of quotes from the Brisbane Area - $600/$700 (against Mitsubishi supply $500/Labour $300).

Anyone know of anything better Brisbane/Ipswich/Toowoomba.

i seem to remember Brett saying something about this a while ago, and that he worked out that you need XYZ thickness steel to have XYZ amount of strength. im sure you could find this out off the internet (ill get onto it )

give you some idea- BUT I was saying I could put you guys onto the manufacturer of the rear bar on the hilux, who did "rated recovery points" front and rear on all our mine vehicles.

I went to get a couple of prices from TJM/ARB on the weekend.

TJM MN Rear Bar/Step (RRP $595 bar only). The guy at Geebung quoted $979.08 fitted + $280.00 colour coding, although the picture he showed me seemed to be the older-style bar and he wasn't aware of the new MN Rear bar when i asked

ARB MN Rear Step Tow Bar: $1,118.00 + $360.00 fitting = $1,478.00 (total fitted). I think colour coding is on top of this again

Hayman Reece MN Tow Bar (with factory rear step) from ARB: $615.00 + $90.00 fitting = $705.00 (total fitted).

The 4x4 & Camping show this weekend may have some better pricing...
